Why does my Rain Bird sprinkler system keep running? ›

If your controller is off and the water keeps running there is an issue with 1 or all the valves or supply lines. When this happens it may be necessary to clean or replace a valve, or to call a contractor.

Is the water turned on, is the controller plugged in and programmed correctly, are there isolation valves that might be turned off? Verify valve operation by using the manual bleed. This might indicate a controller or wiring problem if the valve works properly when using the manual bleed.

Every valve has a solenoid with two wires; one common wire, and one zone wire. The common wire is usually white but can be any color as long as it's hooked to the common slot in the sprinkler timer. It's important for the common wire to be connected to every zone.

A common reason for a controller to repeat a cycle is too many programmed start times. Only one start time per active program is required, a second start time will cycle the program an additional time. NOTE: In the Start Times dial position, the numbers 1-4 do not represent stations.

Even when the controller turns off, it still runs indefinitely. The problem is most likely located in one of the solenoid valves. These valves are usually located in an underground access box outside in the yard. Before you call your irrigation service provider, you might want to take a look inside the access box.

Solenoid Valve Does Not Open or Close

Rusting, power failure, irregular pressure, missing equipment, an incorrect amount of voltage or current, dirt stuck in the system and corrosion are some of the possible reasons why a solenoid valve may not properly close or open.

When a controller waters all zones more than one time, like watering all of them in sequence and then starts over and does it again, it may be a programming issue. Sometimes there is more than one start time per program when only one start time was intended. Double check all of your start times and run times.

Watering frequency options include watering on Odd days, Even Days, Custom days, or Cyclic Days. An example of Custom Days is above, where you choose the specific days each week that will water. An example of Cyclic Days is below. This is where you water every “blank” number of days, and you choose how often that is.

Testing the System

Once installed, the completed system can be tested by turning on any controller irrigation zone, verifying that zone does come on, and then pressing down on the Rain Sensor pin located on the top of the dial cap. The irrigation system should stop watering within a few seconds.

How do I reconnect my Rain Bird WiFi module? ›

If you are unable to connect to the controller, try pulling the WiFi module out of the controller and re-inserting it, allowing it to boot back up again. It should be blinking green when you try to connect in the Rain Bird app.

Without digging, it is possible to find sprinkler lines by getting a design map from the company that installed the system. If this is not possible, one could go to the valve box and follow a line back to each of the head sprinklers in a circuit. Or one could utilize an electronic water-detection device.
